In the history of mankind, it is hard to say when poems and songs parted their ways, poetry up to the educated and well-off intellectuals, lyrics down to the mass, who showed carelessly poured emotions with music. After centuries, the question remains, what was there to distinguish poetry from songs, what made them poems and what were lyrics?
Perhaps it is not important.
When life, the very individual experience, got composed into a defining lyric, sang by millions; when story, the boat-carrying pain more than joy, kept floating in the river of time; the struggle and plight, the meditation that leads to an endless collectivity, poems and songs are there to record.
Lana Del Rey published her first poetry collection, Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass 2020 in September, however, she is a poem in many’s mind for quite a long time. Wonderfully composed, poems are of Lana Del Rey’s retro style, painfully deep. She’s not the joy slicer. In this debut poetry collection, she raised questions as well as gave answers, quite positive, optimistic, enabling and empowering. No cliche. Poems also offer a kind of silent feeling, subtly giving a breeze to the fatigue that we carry each day.
Lana Del Rey, the lady of fame, the lady who sings Money Anthem, the lady of success story, has made repetitive declarations in the new collection, over and over — I am a poet, I write, like trying to persuade others into her religion of words, sang by her still, but with no tunes. It is that hard?
Still, for the poems, she offered her voice too. (Listen to ME for the sample.) Only with her voice, somehow lewd, drunk murmuring, yet fast, swift as if a drunkard chasing her own thoughts… Couldn’t catch a break… For the printed words, she offered her own handwriting, photos taken by her as well, all too personal, but at that moment — the “NOWNESS” for her– were all too perfect a claim for being one’s own poet, the most intimate commitment to make.
In the end of the poetry collection, there are Haikus, even more concise, several syllables, a few verse, but burst into full bloom.
Commuting can be hard during epidemic. Try Lana Del Rey’s new poetry collection Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass 2020. Immersing into the other world she uttered, literally and again literally.
